Introduction

JW Marriott, a luxury hotel, aimed to improve guest experiences through wellness initiatives by maintaining high indoor air quality (IAQ). They sought a solution to ensure a healthy environment for guests and staff while showcasing real-time air quality data to enhance transparency and trust.

Problem Statement

Maintaining optimal indoor air quality can be a complex task, especially in large spaces with fluctuating occupancy. JW Marriott needed an air quality monitoring solution that not only provided real-time data but also met the stringent standards of the RESET certification—a global benchmark for air quality in buildings. They wanted a system that would allow them to actively manage and improve air quality, while also giving them the tools to showcase their commitment to guest well-being.

Two critical indoor air quality parameters JW Marriott focused on were CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds).

Both of these can significantly impact the overall air quality in a hotel setting:

  • CO2 levels tend to rise in enclosed spaces with high occupancy, such as guest rooms, meeting halls, and lobbies. High CO2 levels can lead to fatigue, headaches, and reduced cognitive function, affecting both staff performance and guest comfort
  • TVOCs, which include chemicals released from building materials, cleaning products, furnishings, and even perfumes, can accumulate in indoor environments like hotel rooms, spas, and gyms. Prolonged exposure to high levels of TVOCs can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and long-term respiratory issues.
  • In addition to these, the hotel also monitors other important factors like PM2.5 and PM10 to keep the air safe and comfortable.
